About me

portrait

My name is Bjorn Verbakel. I am a driven HBO-ICT student at Fontys University of Applied Sciences in Eindhoven, with a focus on front-end development. My passion lies in building interactive and user-friendly web applications, and I focus on creating visually appealing and intuitive designs.

In addition to my front-end skills, I also have experience with back-end development (such as Node.js and PHP) and am familiar with UX/UI design principles. This broad knowledge enables me to not only build technically strong solutions but also to seamlessly collaborate on the entire user experience - from visual design to functional implementation.

Het Hornemann Huis

2025 | Interactive choose-your-own-adventure video experience

expand-btn

I made a choose-your-own-adventure video experience for Het Hornemann Huis, a history museum that tells the tragic story of what the Hornemann family went through during the Second World War.

The goal was to get young people more interested in history, and make them think about the dilemma's that people had to face during the war. The product was this interactive experience, where the audience gets presented a story sequence which ends with a dilemma. People can then vote on which choice they would have made with their phones, and see the results of the poll afterwards. The most voted answer decides what the next sequence will be, and what the eventual outcome of the story will be.

The project was made with a team of 3 people. I worked on the ideation, research, design and development of the product. The website was made with HTML, CSS, JavaScript and PHP. The real-time communication is done with WebSockets.

We also got the oppotunity to test the product live with a large audience, which was a great experience and gave us some valuable feedback that was used to improve the product.

Media studio website

2024 | Website with storytelling aspects

expand-btn

I made a website for our media studio project, where we had to create a concept for a new media studio. This was then used to pitch to clients with the goal of securing the preferred assignment we would like to work on for the rest of the semester.

The website features storytelling aspects, where the client is sketched as a sailor lost at sea, and studio as a compass that guides them to their destination. I worked on the concepting, designing and development of the website.

3D monitor & operating system

2024 | 3D environment with interactable PC and operating system

expand-btn

I made a 3D environment with a monitor that displays an operating system. The monitor is interactable, and the user can perform various actions on it. It was mostly based on the website henryheffernan.com which I thought looked cool and wanted to try and recreate from scratch. The OS was made to look similar to Windows 98, but is not the exact same.

The 3D model was custom made and I learned Blender to create it. The screen was tied to the 3D object using ThreeJS Drei.

At the time, I used the simulated internet explorer to showcase my work for my second semester.

Live solar panel dashboard

2024 | Dashboard for tracking of automatic solar panel cleaning device

expand-btn

This was my final project for the first semester. I made a dashboard for tracking the performance of an automatic solar panel cleaning device. This was mostly aimed at large solar panel fields in the desert where the panels get dirty quickly and need to be cleaned often. The device was made by other team members, and I was tasked with creating a dashboard that could display the data that the device was collecting. The device was an Arduino that sent data to a phpMyAdmin database. The dashboard was made with HTML, CSS, PHP and JavaScript.

After you login to your account you see the performance of your solar panels, and when they were last cleaned. You can also see the statistics of the device itself. The entire dashboard can also be filtered to only display the data of a specific solar panel or group of panels.

I also designed a poster for the eventual presentation of the project.

EnergieHuis Slim Wonen

2023 | Miniature energy-efficient model home

expand-btn

I made a miniature energy-efficient model home for EnergieHuis Slim Wonen, during my exam year at highscool. Energiehuis provides people with advice on how to make their homes more energy-efficient. The goal of this project was to make an visual aid for the advisors to better explain the possibilities to their clients.

Together with another group member I had made a model of an example of an older home lacking the energy-saving solutions and a home in which sustainability measures had been taken. For example, the sustainable home had a heat pump, solar panels, good insulation and a smart ventilation system.

This project was part of the Technasium, the educational direction that I followed at the Dr. Knippenbergcollege. It would be entered into the INESPO Sustainability Olympiad where it won the first price. Following this we were also interviewed by the local news paper De Loop, where you can read more.
